Title: Lethal efficacy of indoor ornamental plant Aglaonema marantifolium (Schott.) against three economically important stored product pests Callosobruchus chinensis (L.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Tribolium castaneum (HBST.)

Abstract

Petroleum ether (Pet. ether), chloroform (CHCl₃) and methanol (CH₃OH) extracts of the test plant Aglaonema marantifolium (Schott.) have been subjected to dose-mortality and repellent activity tests against adult beetles of Callosobruchus chinensis (L.), Sitophillus oryzae (L.) and Tribolium castaneum (HBST.). The Pet. ether extract of A. marantifolium gave the LD₅₀ values 1.04, 0.91, 0.87, 0.83, 0.80, 0.78 and 0.77mg/cm² against S. oryzae; 1.34, 1.19, 1.14, 1.12, 1.07, 1.03 and 1.02mg/cm² against T. castaneum; and the CH₃OH extract gave the LD₅₀ values 2.34, 2.15, 1.93, 1.86, 1.83, 1.82 and 1.81mg/cm² against C. chinensis after 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42h of exposures respectively. The CHCl₃ extract did not show any mortality against all the three test insects. In repellency tests, the CHCl₃ extract was found to show significant repellent activity against the adult beetles of C. chinensis at 5% level of significance (P<0.05). However, Pet. ether and CH₃OH extracts of A. marantifolium did not show repellent activity against any of the three test beetles.

Abstract

Petroleum ether (Pet. ether), chloroform (CHCl3) and methanol (CH3OH) extracts of test plant Epipremnum aureum (Linden & Andre) G. S. Bunting have been subjected to dose-mortality and repellent activity tests against adult beetles of Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.), Sitophillus oryzae and Callosobruchus chinensis (L.). The Pet. ether extract of E. aureum offered mortality to T. castaneum, S. oryzae and C. chinensis. Pet. ether extract of E. aureum gave the LD50 values 1.40, 1.21, 1.16, 1.10, 1.04, 0.96 and 0.84mg/cm2 against T. castaneum; 1.73, 1.66, 1.32, 1.08, 1.00, 0.99 and 0.90mg/cm2 against S. oryzae; 2.95, 2.02, 2.01, 1.91, 1.82, 1.72 and 1.65mg/cm2 against C. chinensis after 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42h of exposure respectively. In this dose-mortality investigation, lethal activity of Pet. ether extract of E. aureum was found according to the descending order T. castaneum> S. oryzae> C. chinensis. CHCl3 and CH3OH extracts of this plant did not show any mortality against T. castaneum, S. oryzae and C. chinensis. In repellency tests, Pet. ether and CHCl3 extracts of E. aureum was found to show significant repellent activity against the adult beetles of T. castaneum and C. chinensis. The activity of Pet. ether extract of E. aureum found significant repellent activity against T. castaneum and C. chinensis at 5% level of significance (P<0.05). CHCl3 extract of E. aureum showed significant repellent activity against T. castaneum and C. chinensis at 1% level of significance (P<0.01) and at 5% level of significance (P<0.05) respectively. However, the CH3OH extract of E. aureum did not show repellent activity against T. castaneum, S. oryzae and C. chinensis.

এই সময়ডাতে কলকাতায় একটা হিন্দু মাইয়ার সাথে পরিচয় হইছিল। ১৭ বছরের কম বয়স। তয় হাতে পায়ে ডাঙর। মাঝে মাঝে কথা হইত। আমার সাথে কথা কওনের সময় ও ওর ঠোঁট আর চোখ এমনভাবে ছন্দে মিলাইতো যেন আমি ওর প্রতিটা চাহনিতে আঁউরে যাইতুম।

কারণ হিসাবে আমি কিছু আঁচ করতে পারচিলাম না। নতুন আর অল্পবয়স্ক ছাওয়াল আমি। খুন হইয়ে যাব, ব্যবসায় এরকম শত্রু হওয়ার মত সময়ই দিতে পারি নাই।

ষ্টেশনে এসে কইল, আমার সাথে কথা কওনের সময় আপনি অমন হ্যব্দার মত করে তাকায় থাকেন কেন? নেশা করেন নাকি?

আমি তাহার চোক্ষে চোখ রাইখে কলাম, অর্ণবী? আমাকে বাঁচাতে তুমি এইখানে কেন?

অর্ণবী আমাকে জাইপটা ধইরা কইল, আমি কুমারি। আপনি কি আমাকে সংগে নিবার চান?

ট্রেনের মধ্যে কী হয়ছিল কিচ্ছু মনে নাই। শুধু আমাক জিজ্ঞাস করা অর্ণবীর একটা কথা মনে আচে- "আপনের ধর্মে ভগবানকে আল্লাহ ডাকে, তাই না?"

আমি কলাম- হ।

দ্যাশে আসার পর অর্ণবী আমার সেই ২৫ লাখ টেকা মানুষের মদ্দ্যে বিলি করে দিল। আমি মইরে গেলে টেকাডা তো অন্যেরই হইত।

পরে অর্ণবী আমাক আর ইন্ডিয়া যাইতে দেয় নি। শূন্য হাতে আমাগোর এই জীবনের শুরু। আমি তকুন ২৩বছর ছুঁইছুঁই। আর এহন রিশকা চালক।

আইজ আমার আর অর্ণবীর সাতাইশ বছর, অর্ণবীর সাথে কথা কইতে গেলে সে তার কাজলে আঁকা ভরাট চোক্ষু দুইডা আকাশ মুখো কইরা আমার দিকে তাকায়া কাঁপাকাঁপা গলায় এখনো কয়- নেশা কইরে মোর সামনে আসবা না তো। বিরাক্ত।
